Strengthening District Hospitals with Essential Orthopaedic Equipment

Across Malawi, district hospitals serve as the first and often only point of contact for patients with fractures and orthopaedic injuries. Yet many of these facilities lack basic equipment and tools needed to provide proper orthopaedic care from splints and casting materials to other supplies that clinical staff depend on daily. The Malawi Orthopaedic Association works to close this gap by equipping district hospitals with the tools they need to strengthen orthopaedic care at the local level.

Why This Activity Matters
Malawi’s healthcare system is heavily centralized, with orthopaedic surgeons concentrated almost entirely in central hospitals in the major cities. District hospitals which serve the majority of the population, especially in rural areas are staffed primarily by orthopaedic clinical officers (OCOs), who manage the bulk of fracture and trauma cases without a surgeon present. Without the right tools and equipment on hand, even routine cases can be poorly managed, leading to complications, chronic pain, or permanent disability that could otherwise have been prevented. Donations support:

• Identifying Equipment Needs: Assessing what each district hospital is missing, based on its caseload and current gaps.
• Sourcing and Supplying Equipment: Providing essential tools and materials suited to each facility’s needs.
• Distribution Logistics: Delivering equipment to hospitals, including hard-to-reach rural facilities where transport and supply chains are often the biggest barrier.
• Staff Guidance: Briefing hospital staff on proper use of new equipment so it translates into better patient outcomes.
