“Ride Safe, Ride Alive; Walking Towards Safety”

Motorcycle taxis known locally as “kabaza” are a lifeline for transport across Malawi, especially in areas underserved by public transit. But they’re also a major driver of preventable trauma injuries, filling orthopaedic wards with riders and passengers who never wore a helmet or followed basic road safety practices. The Malawi Orthopaedic Association’s Kabaza Safety Awareness Campaign tackles this crisis head-on combining public engagement, fundraising, medical support, and stakeholder partnerships to change riding culture before more lives are lost.

Objective
Mitigate preventable Kabaza accidents and promote safety protocols through effective public engagement, fundraising, medical support, and stakeholder engagement.

Campaign Activities

• Tri-City Trek (Walk): A walking journey from Mzuzu to Blantyre, raising visibility and awareness of Kabaza safety along the route.
• Raising Kabaza Champions: Engagement at central hospitals, identifying and equipping safety advocates from within the Kabaza rider community itself.
• Kabaza Grand Rally: A culminating rally at Area 25 and other spots in Lilongwe (LLW), bringing riders, health workers, and the public together for a final safety push.

Why This Campaign Matters
Every Kabaza accident that ends in serious injury places additional strain on Malawi’s already overstretched orthopaedic system a sector with only a handful of trained surgeons for the entire country. Prevention through awareness is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce that burden before it ever reaches a hospital bed.
