Fracture Care Training for Malawi’s Surgeons

With as few as 11–16 trained orthopaedic surgeons for a population of over 20 million, most of Malawi’s fracture and trauma cases are handled by orthopaedic clinical officers (OCOs) — frontline specialists who often work without a surgeon anywhere nearby. Advanced training for both surgeons and OCOs is one of the most direct ways to expand access to safe, effective fracture care.

Why This Training Matters
In 2022, MOA partnered with the AO Alliance to train over 20 trauma and orthopaedic surgeons and residents in nonoperative fracture management and locked plating techniques — part of the broader Long Bone Fracture Program supported by partners including KidsOR, Lifebox, UNC, and Johnson & Johnson. This kind of training directly determines whether a patient with a complex fracture receives modern treatment or goes without. Donations support:

• Hands-On Courses: Practical training in techniques like locked plating for complex fractures.
• Equipment for Training: Practice models and tools needed for surgeons and residents to learn safely.
• OCO Scholarships: Helping clinical officers — the backbone of rural fracture care since Malawi’s OCO program began in 1985 — access specialized courses.
• Certification & Materials: Covering the administrative costs of formal training programs.
