Malawi Orthopaedic Association 2026 Annual Symposium, Scientific Conference and General Meeting

The Malawi Orthopaedic Association (MOA) holds its Annual Symposium, Scientific Conference and General Meeting this September in Mangochi. The yearly gathering brings together orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic clinical officers, prosthetists and orthotists, allied health professionals, researchers, students, policy makers and innovators to share experience and build skills in orthopaedic and trauma care.

Theme

This year’s theme is Advancing Fracture Care through Evidence, Innovation and Collaboration. The symposium focuses on the management of open tibia fractures in resource-limited settings, a common and serious injury that puts real pressure on health facilities across Malawi.

Programme

The first day is a theoretical and practical course on open tibia fracture management and rehabilitation, run in collaboration with AO Alliance. It is aimed at orthopaedic clinical officers, surgeons, prosthetists and orthotists, and other allied health professionals.

The second day is dedicated to scientific paper presentations and an innovation showcase, with oral and poster presentations alongside technology demonstrations. Contributions span six areas: evidence-based fracture care; innovation and technology in fracture care; rehabilitation, prosthetics and orthotics; collaboration and health systems strengthening; research, quality improvement and education; and injury prevention and emergency trauma care.

The General Meeting also gives MOA members the chance to review the association’s work and plan for the year ahead.

Why it matters

Fracture care in Malawi depends on more than surgical skill. It needs good evidence, practical technology and strong links between clinicians, engineers, researchers and policy makers. The MOA conference is one of the few spaces where all of these come together in one room, and it continues to serve as a key platform for continuing professional development in the field.
